The Hub's ongoing work on the establishment of a one-stop border
post at Malaba gave rise to World Bank (and African Development
Bank) funding to create the physical infrastructure for the Malaba
Border post crossing, and other border posts in the region. The
Hub is currently funding the refurbishment of the Malaba railway
station building as premises to be shared by both the Uganda and
Kenya Revenue Authorities.
The Uganda and Kenya Revenue Authorities have already begun working
side by side in the Uganda Customs building, carrying out inspection
of vehicles transporting goods from the region's interior i.e. Kampala,
Kigali, Bujumbura and Eastern DRC., to the port of Mombasa. As a
result, the clearing of trucks by customs is now taking between twenty
minutes to three hours, a marked improvement from the previous three
to five days.
The Hub has worked with the World Bank as a strategic (funding)
partner on the project, including an infrastructure survey of 18
major crossing points between EAC member countries whose ultimate
goal is to create a more efficient economic zone through a significant
reduction in transaction costs, in a region that has among the highest
transport costs in the world. |
